Alien Jungle
Alien Jungle - Single Player Level Design
2010: Aliens Vs Predator (Xbox 360, PS3 and PC)
When I began work on the Alien Jungle map I was essentially presented with a blank canvas. The first step was to play through the missions from the Predator and Marine species that also shared the same map. From that play-through I made notes that lead to a first pass level design plan - proposing key events, encounters and combat scenarios along with some modifications to the geometry. Also I proposed narrative links with the other species campaigns with reference to the overall narrative and interwoven timeline.
Given that each map in Aliens Vs Predator is shared between the three species, the majority of the world geometry was already locked down. However, as a few geometry changes were required here to accommodate the alien player those alterations needed to take into account any impacts on the other species. This was done by working closely with the species design leads responsible for the other campaigns, environment artists, lighting artists and members of the code team.
Key duties include:
- Working from the Oxford studio on level design for the Alien species missions
- Writing level design documentation, creating top-down diagrams and scripting plans
- Final level implementation and scenario scripting including overall level logic
- Work closely with lighting artist to specify and refines areas of light and shadow
- Script and continuity responsibilities including writing A. I. dialogue and contributing to the narrative timeline
- Critiquing and writing feedback documents for mechanics and other levels
- Conducting internal play tests, reviewing and cataloguing external test data
- Balancing / re-working scenarios and encounters according to test data findings and feedback from key project stakeholders

Gateway Entrance
This map offered lots of shadowed areas for the Xenomorph player to use strategically.
Open Jungle Area
Marines scripted to investigate the area allowing the Xenomorph player time to get close or find another way round.
Scripted Encounters
Colonial Marines fight back after an Alien attack - one of many scripted encounters and events on this map.
Easy Does it
Tight claustrophobic spaces like this lift shaft provide an opportunity for some stealth tactics and a change of pace.
Clean Escape
When the Xenomorph player is trapped by marines - if clever, can escape before the marines arrive.
Dangerous Prey
Approach this final civilian clumsiy and he'll likely pull the pin on a nearby hand grenade to end it all.
